Why should you breath into a bag when you're hyperventilating? Is getting drunk really a way to treat methanol poisoning? How many insects do you eat in a chocolate bar? You'll be able to answer all of those questions and much, much more with the knowledge and skills you'll gain from this course.
BIOC 141 is designed for pre-allied health majors such as nursing and dental hygiene, however all students seeking to learn more about the chemical fundamentals employed in the healthcare fields will benefit. I look forward to helping you achieve your career goals.
This course is equivalent to CHEM 151 in the UH System. If you have already taken CHEM 151 and/or the CHEM 161/162 then you will have covered the majority of the material taught in the course.
This class does NOT fulfill the upper-level biochemistry course requirement for admission to pharmacy, medicine, dental, and veterinary school. Those programs require a junior or senior level course such as BIOL 402, MBBE 402 and BIOC 441 at UH Manoa or another 4-year university. I would love to have you as a student, but please be aware that this course will not satisfy the requirement you may seeking to fulfill and will repeat most of what you have already learned in previous courses.
Leeward CC offers the whole year of allied health chemistry required for various nursing programs in Hawaii and on the mainland. If you are considering attending UH Hilo or Hawaii Pacific University's Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree programs, then you will want to take BIOC 141 and BIOC 251.
The one-year sequence will cover general, organic, and biological chemistry. The same textbook is used for both courses.
Online distance education courses offer enhanced flexibility for busy students, parents seeking to better provide for their families, and returning students looking to pick up where they left off. But not everyone well-suited to succeed in the non-traditional setting of online courses.
Your success requires a great degree self-motivation and superior time management skills. Many students discover that distance learning is not the best method for their individual learning style and perform better in a traditional face-to-face setting. You may want to visit the UH Distance Education Guide to ensure you are prepared for an online learning environment.

Watch this video for a walkthrough of the Laulima tools you'll be using and our Course Website.
In the Resources tool of Laulima you will find the textbook. The text is an open educational resource and is free to read/print/view. Not all topics covered in the course are in the textbook, so always use my lectures, worksheets and study guides as the primary sources of content.
The previous textbook for the course, authored by Timberlake, is also a fine resource and may be used for the course. If you would like to purchase it, I highly recommend using a previous edition so the cost is low. In our chemistry study area (PS 204) I have placed my personal copy of that textbook and solutions manual for your use while studying there.
Here is an interactive periodic table that shows the common uses of each element. Have some fun with it!
